Mission
Our mission is to develop new and improve present synthetic methods for preparation of organic molecules, and to develop modern machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools for medicinal and pharmaceutical research. As a part of the three academic institutes, the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki; the Department of computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Helsinki and the School of Pharmacy in University of Eastern Finland, most of the research is carried out in our own state-of-the-art laboratories, which are located in the Viikki and Kumpula Campuses in Helsinki, the southern Finland, and in Kuopio Campus in eastern part of Finland, north Europe.
Our Story
Our story began in 2016, when Principal Investigator, Dr. Juri Timonen, started research under the supervision of Professor Jarkko Rautio and soon continued as an independent researcher. To date, the group has three main topics and several collaborative side-projects. In 2022, Dr. Timonen moved to the University of Helsinki to work in an industry-related project developing AI/ML tools for improving synthetic methods in medicinal chemistry. In 2025 the research group expanded into the University of Helsinki and started to work also in the field of AI. Dr. Timonen also collaborates with several national and international research groups.
What We Offer
Our group offers an inspiring and dynamic research environment for researchers from different academic stages and backgrounds! Interested undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students of chemistry, biomedicine, bio sciences, pharmacy, computer science and related disciplines are welcomed to apply to enrich our team. Our state-of-the-art synthesis laboratories offers possibilities to work with heterocyclic compounds, amino acids, and different classes of boron compounds. Our projects also work with molecular modelling, mass spectrometry, NMR, natural products, and prodrugs.
